File sharing refers to a method of collecting and
distributing data using servers and network(s). Users collect/store digital
information such as multi media files (music, videos, images), documents (PDFs,
eBooks) and computer programs on servers. All of these files become available
for download to all the users through the Internet. In today’s world where there
is so much information online that is always changing, file sharing is a great
way to distribute large amounts of data to a lot of people quickly. Whether it
is new or updated information, file sharing helps users keep up-to-date.
A file sharing service I personally use is Dropbox. I mainly
use it when doing group work because the group members and I can share a single
folder where we can keep all of the files we need. This way all the work we
have done can be access by anyone in the group at any time and if someone
improves one of the files then they can upload it back to Dropbox so that the
rest of the group can access the updated version.
Unfortunately, file sharing gets a bad reputation because people
use it to distribute copyrighted material (such as movies and music) illegally,
thus hurting the industry.

Hi Jonathan,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on how file sharing has changed the way people share things on the Internet. I still remember what we did to share a 4gb file with our friends. We had to either burn a disc or copy it to a flash driver, and then bring it to our friends. Thanks to online file sharing services, we don't have to do it anymore. We can just stay home and share everything we want on the cloud with our friends.
Anyways, your post is really interesting. Keep up the great work!
Nice summary on file sharing through the cloud. Everything has their own advantages and disadvantages and cloud is no exception. While it certainly helps users collaborate in much simpler way, it also hurts the media industry when users share music, movies and other entertainment material, which legally they should not. While cloud isn't the only way for sharing such copyrighted material, cloud shouldn't be blamed for that. It has many more positive usages as you have correctly described.
ReplyDeleteAwesome post, to me file sharing should not be permitted because One of the risks that users who practice file sharing get is exposure to viruses. The decrease in sales, the fact that it is not fair use, the risk of exposure to viruses, and the fact that it leads to lawsuits are risks and facts which make file sharing a major issue that should be regulated. File sharing is wrong in many ways, and it also affects everyone one, from consumers to major companies. The time has come for congress to open their eyes and realize the tremendous impact file sharing has on our society and economy and put more strict laws on the practice of file sharing.
