Communications and Security: Secure Yourself

Thanks to the Internet our entire world has become as small as the smallest smartphone. Using email, social networks and other communication services (i.e. Skype) we are able to communicate with anyone almost anywhere in the world through it. However, just like the Internet allows us to connect with people, other people are able to connect to us and they do not mean well. Using the Internet exposes a person’s personal information to a degree, this degree tends to increase when they use more online services; such as social networks or their bank account. If a person does not protect their computer and online services properly, they can expose the personal information that they store to the wrong sort of people.
To protect online services that store personal information (and usually require a password to access) use unique passwords that are difficult to guess (but that you can still remember) for each service. This way even if one password is cracked, the damage that the person(s) that cracked it can be contained.

Most importantly, is to protect your computer because that device can hold the most personal information. Protect your computer by keep your antivirus, operating system and web browser(s) updated. By keeping your antivirus updated, you can be better protected from malware that can be used to steal you personal information without you even knowing. Keeping your operating systems and web browser(s) up-to-date will prevent people from exploiting flaws in the old versions to get into your computer.

  1. I agree with you that because of our technological advancements, we are at a HIGHER risk of malware attacks. Technology is just advancing too fast for solutions to become developed. I will keep your tips in mind since I have caught a computer virus before and that was not a pleasant experience. I think people are often too lazy to pick a sophisticated password; they would prefer choosing a simpler password to make it easier on them to remember. In any case, I will definitely work on securing my computer.

  2. Hi Jonatan,
You did a good job on organizing this post. The first paragraph speaks about internet’s inevitable role in our day-to-day life. It also talks about how a system is prone to virus and malware is it is not protected properly. The second paragraph gives the solution for the problems in the first paragraph. Link you provided on ways to protect a computer was informative. Some of the ways you mentioned in the post are also helpful.
Overall, this post is good and informative!

  3. I totally agree with you that create a very unique and strong password for every single website can highly improve your web security. From what I heard, most hacker usually get into your into your account by guess all the common password. The basic way to create a password is to use put in number, uppercase and some special character if possible. Using antivirus program is another good advice. We don't know how some of the viruses or malware can steal information stored on your computer. It is better to have some kind of protection to be on the safer side.

  4. Hi Jonatan,

I’m totally agreed with you. Internet makes the world small. You can get in contact with your friends anywhere anytime. You can share with them your photos, the restaurants you like. But, Internet also increases our risks to the evil world. They try to get our personal information, steal our money from our banks, fraud our identities to do bad things, send viruses to us just for fun. We need to find a way to fight with them.
